1/18/22- UScellular and Boys & Girls Club of Jefferson City Announce 6th Annual Black History Month Art Contest

Tuesday, January 18th, 2022

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, representatives from UScellular and Boys & Girls Club of Jefferson City announced the commencement of the 6th annual UScellular Black History Month Art Contest. Online voting returns for this year’s contest, while also featuring an exciting new element.

For the first time, Boys & Girls Club of Jefferson City members are encouraged to create their original pieces of artwork in recognition of influential Black icons in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), including historical figures, world leaders, scientists and educators.

In late January, 10 finalists will be chosen by representatives from the Boys & Girls Club and local UScellular leaders based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme and overall impression. The finalists’ artwork will be digitally displayed in select stores and from Feb. 1 – Feb. 28, anyone 18 and older will be invited to vote for their favorite art online.

“We are excited to celebrate Black History Month and bring a new iteration of this beloved art contest to Jefferson City,” said Justin Skiles, area sales manager for UScellular in Missouri. “The talented youth at Boys & Girls Club of Jefferson City will have a chance to showcase their creativity and hopefully learn more about the successes that Black people have achieved in STEM. We can’t wait to see what they create.”

“The Arts have always been a way for youth to not only express themselves and showcase their creativity but are also used as a tool for healing and identity development,” says Dr. Tanisha Grimes Oakley, senior leader of strategy implementation and youth development at Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “This is even more poignant when African American youth have the opportunity to see themselves represented in the STEM field, showing them that they too have access and can continue to dream big.”

The top three vote-getters will be announced in March and will receive prizes that include a $250 gift card for first place, $150 gift card for second and $100 gift card for third.

UScellular is focused on addressing gaps in STEM education and is committed to connecting more than 200,000 of tomorrow’s innovators each year with the resources they need today to help shape future opportunities. For more information about UScellular’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, please go to https://newsroom.uscellular.com/community/.

No Purchase Necessary. Entrants who are minors must have parental consent to participate in the Contest. Official Contest Rules, including full entry details and Finalist and Winner selection criteria/voting are available by email request to USCDLMediaRelations@uscellular.com.

In celebration of the life and legacy of late civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., WGU Missouri has launched a new scholarship for those who have always dreamed of completing their college degrees and advancing their careers but faced challenges along the way that prevented them from moving forward. The fully online, nonprofit university will award $75,000 in scholarships to new and returning students to provide support and help encourage them to fulfill their educational goals. The “I Have a Dream” scholarships are open to new and returning students enrolling in any of WGU’s 60-plus undergraduate and graduate degree programs in information technology, business, teacher education and health professions, including nursing. Each scholarship is valued at up to $4,000 and will be credited to students’ accounts at a rate of $1,000 per six-month term, renewable for up to four terms. Applications are being accepted now through June 30 at missouri.wgu.edu/dream.

“Nearly 60 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., laid out his vision for a future where people of all races and backgrounds were afforded the same rights, opportunities and privileges,” said Dr. Angie Besendorfer, Chancellor of WGU Missouri. “His activism opened minds and inspired people to strive for a more equitable society, and his words and actions continue to challenge us today. In that spirit, we are proud to offer this scholarship in his honor in hopes that those who have consistently faced challenges that prevented them from moving forward with their education plans can be inspired to go back to school and complete their degrees.”

11/04/21-WGU Missouri Honors Veterans, Current Military Service Members and their Families with $75,000 in Scholarships for Veterans Day

Thursday, November 4th, 2021

In recognition of Veterans Day and to honor service members for their sacrifice and commitment to our country’s future, WGU Missouri will be offering $75,000 in scholarships to veterans, active-duty military personnel and their immediate family members who are interested in furthering their education. The “Military Appreciation Scholarship” is available for those interested in pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree from WGU Missouri in any of the online, nonprofit university’s 60+ programs in IT, business, K-12 education, and health professions, including nursing.

Each “Military Appreciation Scholarship” is valued at up to $2,500 per student and will be applied at the rate of $625 per six-month term, renewable for up to four terms. The scholarship is open to new students who have been officially admitted to WGU Missouri and qualify as active-duty military personnel, a reservist, a veteran or a military spouse or child. Scholarships will be awarded based on a candidate’s academic record, financial need and current competency, as well as other considerations.

“WGU is thankful for each and every member of the military– and their supportive families – for their selfless dedication to serving our country,” said Dr. Angie Besendorfer, Chancellor of WGU Missouri. “One way we’re proud to give back to those who give so much is through our Military Appreciation Scholarship. In addition to the military-exclusive scholarship offering, WGU’s degree programs are also approved for VA education benefits under the GI Bill – and because of our low, flat-rate tuition, that means veterans are usually eligible for benefits that make their program effectively tuition-free.”

WGU has been named one of the top Military Friendly® Schools for 11 consecutive years by Military Advanced Education and Transition Magazine. More than 17,200 WGU students are currently affiliated with the military, approximately 11 percent of the student population. Earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree from WGU can help them transition into a rewarding, high-paying civilian position upon graduation.

WGU Missouri’s programs are competency-based, providing flexibility and workforce-focused degree programs active-duty military members, veterans, and their families need. Designed to meet the needs of adult learners, competency-based education allows students to move quickly through material they already know so they can focus on what they still need to learn, rather than basing progress on a number of credit hours. Faculty members work one-on-one with students as mentors, offering guidance, support and individualized instruction. While the university’s degree programs are rigorous and

challenging, competency-based learning makes it possible for students to accelerate their programs, saving them both time and money.

10/25/21- WGU Missouri Launches New Scholarship for First Responders

Monday, October 25th, 2021

In honor of National First Responders Day, which takes place annually on Oct. 28, WGU Missouri is launching a new scholarship to show appreciation for first responders – including EMTs, police officers, firefighters, corrections officers and others – who have demonstrated unprecedented selflessness and commitment in serving area communities as they carried out their duties throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The fully online, nonprofit university plans to award up to $80,000 in scholarships to area first responders – and their spouses – who are interested in furthering their education. Each “First Responder Appreciation Scholarship” is valued at up to $4,000 per student and will be applied at a rate of $1,000 per term for up to four terms. The scholarships are available for new students enrolled in any of WGU Missouri’s more than 60 degree programs in business, information technology, K-12 teacher education and health professions, including nursing. The scholarship application is available at www.wgu.edu/firstresponders and will be open through June 30, 2022.

“First responders make countless sacrifices on a daily basis to protect our communities, uphold the law and save lives,” said Dr. Angie Besendorfer, Chancellor of WGU Missouri. “While we can never fully repay the debt of gratitude we owe our first responders, we at WGU hope that this scholarship offering can help provide those first responders and their spouses who are considering going back to school an even more affordable path to earning their degrees.”

Designed to meet the needs of busy adult learners, WGU Missouri uses a competency-based education approach to learning, enabling students to take advantage of their knowledge and experience to move quickly through material they already know so they can focus on what they still need to learn. Students complete their programs by studying and taking tests on schedules that fit their lives, advancing as soon as they demonstrate that they have mastered subject matter. The flexible format is perfect for those in full-time, demanding fields, like first responders.

8/26/21 – MidAmerica St. Louis Airport Among Top 5 Least Expensive U.S. Airports

Thursday, August 26th, 2021

MidAmerica St. Louis Airport (BLV) is ranked among the nation’s top five least expensive airports, according to the findings of a recent study of Bureau of Transportation statistics, conducted by FinanceBuzz. The study compares the average airfare cost of 95 airports around the country. MidAmerica Airport placed fifth on the list of “25 least expensive regional airports.” MidAmerica boasts an average airfare cost of $120.10, which is $92.56 cheaper than the average of airports in the study and down $35.54 from last year.

“For years, MidAmerica has provided the St. Louis region with affordable flights to popular destinations and it’s a combination that continues to fuel the airport’s growth,” said St. Clair County Chairman Mark Kern. “We’re thrilled to be recognized as one of the top five least expensive airports in the country and hope to continue making air travel as accessible as possible.”

“MidAmerica St. Louis has served countless travelers from our county and beyond, who appreciate the advantages, including convenient parking just outside the terminal and a hassle-free check-in and security experience,” said Airport Director Bryan Johnson. “I’m glad to see the airport now also be recognized for its outstanding affordability.”

Johnson adds that the airport’s foot traffic is at its highest ever, up 9% from 2019’s record passenger total. During July 2021, the MidAmerica St. Louis Airport had a new record-breaking month for enplaned passenger boardings as 27,505 travelers flew through the airport. Additionally, the week of July 25 set a new weekly total record of 6,281 enplaned passengers. The consistent increases have helped make MidAmerica St. Louis Airport the sixth-busiest airport terminal in Illinois.

Destinations currently served by Allegiant from MidAmerica include Charleston, Daytona Beach, Destin/Ft. Walton Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Las Vegas, Orlando, Phoenix/Mesa, Ft. Myers/Punta Gorda, Sarasota/Bradenton, Savannah, and Tampa Bay/St. Pete.
