9/23/15 – Shrewsbury Walmart Supercenter Opens Doors to Community Sept. 23

Members of the Shrewsbury community and local dignitaries gathered this morning to commemorate the much-anticipated grand opening of the city’s new Walmart Supercenter. The doors officially opened at 8 a.m., following a grand opening celebration and ceremonial ribbon cutting with Shrewsbury Mayor Felicity Buckley. The 133,000-square-foot store, located at 7437 Watson Road, will employ approximately 300 full- and part-time associates and give area residents convenient access to a broad assortment of fresh groceries and general merchandise at our famous Every Day Low Prices.

Open from 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week, the Shrewsbury Walmart Supercenter features a full grocery department with affordable fresh produce, meat, pantry staples and organic food options, along with a full-service deli and an in-store bakery offering custom cakes and fresh baked goods. The Supercenter also offers a range of quality electronics, sporting goods, home décor, furniture, apparel, toys, and more from top brands.

“As we head into fall, this is a very exciting time with sporting events, school events, holidays and family time, and we are here for our customers with Every Day Low Prices,” said Randy York, Shrewsbury store manager. “I am so proud of our team of associates who have worked to make this a great store, and we are ready to serve our community.”

Shrewsbury Supercenter customers will also enjoy a variety of convenient on-site health and wellness services, such as a full-service pharmacy with a drive-through window. The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, health monitors and more, and pharmacists can administer most commonly requested immunizations, including flu shots. There is also a full-service vision center offering a wide variety of affordable, quality eyewear – including glasses and contacts – optical products for all ages, and on-site eye exams.

For those shopping online, the Shrewsbury store will feature Walmart Pickup, a free store pickup service offering free shipping from Walmart.com on eligible items, with many items available for pickup the same day. The Walmart mobile app for iPhone and Android also makes shopping easier than ever. Customers can transfer and refill prescription medications, create shopping lists, search the location of items in their store, check weekly ads and prices, save eReceipts and shop Walmart.com through the app.  (Editor’s Note: Please see attached fact sheet for more information about additional services available at this store.)

As the Shrewsbury Supercenter opens its doors to the public, employment opportunities with the store remain. Interested applicants can apply online at Walmartcareers.com. At Walmart, more than 75 percent of store management teams started as hourly associates, including Shrewsbury store manager Randy York, who began his Walmart career in 1989 as an hourly unloader. In 2014, 160,000 associates were promoted, and 40 percent of those promotions went to associates within the first year of their employment. Earlier this year, Walmart announced it would be making more than a $1B investment in higher wages and training and other enhancements for its associates.

This Saturday, Sept. 26, the grand opening celebration will continue at the Shrewsbury Supercenter, as the store hosts “A Big Family Welcome” from noon to 3 p.m. Members of the public are invited to meet store manager Randy York and enjoy fun family activities and free food samples while supplies last.
