3/27/17-Keep the Kids “Edu-tained” During the Spring Break Road Trip

With spring break around the corner, U.S. Cellular reminds parents that sing-alongs and video games aren’t the only options to entertain the kids on a long road trip. Educational apps can help kids learn as they keep the peace in the back seat.

“Before families hit the road for spring break, U.S. Cellular recommends parents load up their iPhone 7, Samsung Galaxy S7 or tablet with apps that keep kids learning and entertained on long trips,” said Nakeita Stewart, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Illinois. “Access to a nationwide network means kids of all ages can play collaborative learning games whenever and wherever they want.”

In a recent survey, 58 percent of respondents had at least one child with a cellphone – up from 49 percent in 2015.  Meanwhile, 79 percent had used their smartphone to assist them while traveling¹. Here are some educational apps available in the App Store and on Google Play to keep kids “edu-tained” on those long trips:

Duolingo: Learning a second language has never been this fun, or captivating. Games replace flashcards as users race against their friends to learn a new language. (Free on iTunes App Store and Google Play)

Hooked on Phonics: Hook up a preschooler with Hooked on Phonics and soon “I read the story all by myself!” will be heard from the back seat. (Free on iTunes App Store and Google Play)

Mathmateer: Build a rocket, fly it into space – and then the real fun begins. Mathmateer will keep grade-schoolers busy with 56 different math missions ranging from subtraction to square roots. ($2.99 on iTunes App Store)

Stack the States: Perfect for a cross-country trip, Stack the States teaches kids about U.S. geography, state capitals and flags. Crossing state lines and passing through new cities will take on new meaning for kids. ($2.99 on iTunes App Store and Google Play)
