2/1/17 – U.S. Cellular Celebrates Black History Month With Art Contest Held in Conjunction with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbia

The Top 10 drawings from U.S. Cellular’s Black History Month Art Competition, being held in conjunction with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbia, are now on display at the Columbia U.S. Cellular location at 213 N. Stadium Blvd. The artwork features the images of poet and civil rights activist Rosa Parks, blues legend BB King, heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali and other influential African Americans. Area residents, who are 18 years of age and older, are encouraged to stop by the store, during regular store hours, starting today Wednesday, Feb. 1 through Tuesday, Feb. 28 to vote for their favorite original 8.5” x 11”- sized portrait.  The three pieces receiving the most votes will be recognized as first, second and third place winners and the young artists will receive a $250, $150 and $100 gift card prize, respectively.

U.S. Cellular associates teamed up with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbia in early January to kick-off the art contest. Participating kids were encouraged to research past and present African American influencers, learn more about their contributions to society and submit an original 8.5” x 11” portrait of their favorite figure.  A panel of judges comprised of U.S. Cellular associates and representatives of Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbia reviewed each child’s portrayal of these impactful figures, before determining the Top 10 finalists.

“U.S. Cellular is committed to the education of young people in Columbia, and this art contest gives us the opportunity to recognize the creativity of our kids by honoring African-American leaders and celebrating our diversity,” commented Jack Sampson, retail area sales manager for U.S. Cellular in mid-Missouri. “We encourage community members to drop by our store at their convenience to cast their vote for their favorite creation.”

U.S. Cellular’s store in Columbia is open Monday thru Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.  The Black History Month Art Contest is just another example of U.S. Cellular’s commitment to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbia. In recent years, the wireless company has donated $35,000 to this local club, and associates continue to engage in ongoing volunteer opportunities that enable them to mentor and provide kids with hands-on learning experiences.

No Purchase is Necessary to vote. Official Contest Rules, including full entry details and Finalist and Winner selection criteria/voting are available at participating local U.S. Cellular stores and by email request to the Media Contact named below.
